Keep your garage safe with maintenance & organization. Minimize dust, trash and cobwebs or anything that may interfere with the electrical system. Clean up grease & other spills immediately when they occur. Secure shelving units to the walls, making sure they are not overloaded.

- Prevent household injuries caused by falls. Install handrails on stairs & keep them free from clutter. Make sure lighting is adequate, especially in hallways and at the top & bottom of staircases. Use gates in homes with babies & toddlers.

- Select energy-efficient models when buying office equipment & home electronics. Connect them to power strips with surge protectors, and turn off when not in use. Extension cords should only be used temporarily.
Your Home Tip for the month of November,
- Reduce operating cost and improve the efficiency of your refrigerator. Perform annual maintenance by cleaning the coils & checking the drain. At least twice a year make sure the operating temperature is set appropriately.

- Consider using interconnected smoke alarms and have them hard-wired into the home's electrical system. In the event of a fire, each alarm will send out a warning signal. Check the alarms regularly. Be sure to review an emergency evacuation plan with your household.
